Landfill gas to Energy research in the Combustion and Catalysis

چکیده
Landfill Gas to Energy This research investigates the utilization of landfill gas, an abundant waste product, by reforming it to syngas that can be converted to liquid fuels using Fischer Tropsch or to a H2 rich stream using water-gas shift. 65% of the 413 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated per year in the United States is landfilled, and 67% of the landfilled MSW is composed of biomass [1]. This biomass decomposes in landfills to produces gas mixtures of approximately 45-55% CH4, 30-40% CO2, 10-15% N2, 0-5% O2, and other trace compounds, but the composition varies depending on the type of waste and the age of the landfill. Currently less than 10% of this gas is captured and used for energy [2]. This is likely to change as the demand for energy increases making complete and efficient utilization of LFG more important.

1 page only) With regulatory and environmental pressure toward control of landfill gas (LFG) management of collected LFG has become a significant issue. At a minimum, collected LFG must be flared for control of methane and nonmethane organic compounds. Beneficial reuse of LFG as an alternative to combustion has tremendous potential at most landfills. Issues facing reuse of LFG include gas compo...
متن کاملEstimation and Modeling of Biogas Production in Municipal Landfill
The municipal solid waste in Landfill is transformed into landfill gas during a biochemical conversion process called bio-degradation. Gas release from landfills has potentially different environmental effects; therefore, assessing and forecasting the rate of production and release of gas from landfill sites is important for designing these sites and for the successful exploitation of gases as ...
متن کاملEstimation of gas emission released from a municipal solid waste landfill site through a modeling approach: A case study, Sanandaj, Iran
Sanitary landfill is the common strategy for municipal solid waste management in developing countries. Anaerobic decomposition of disposed wastes in landfill under favorable conditions will lead to the landfill gas (LFG) emissions, considering as emerging air pollutants. The emission of greenhouse gases, including methane, resulting from municipal solid waste disposal and treatment processes ar...
متن کاملEstimation and Modeling of Biogas Production in Rural Small Landfills (Case Study: Chaharmahaal and Bakhtiari and Yazd Rural Areas)
One of the main factors contributing to greenhouse gas emissions in the environment is the production of pollutant gases in landfills. Collecting the landfill gases (LFG) effectively reduces the emission of gasses from the landfill site. A precise collection system for LFG can create the potential for energy generation in addition to emissions reduction. However, in Iran, the implementation of ...
متن کاملEstimation and modeling of gas emissions in municipal landfill (Case study: Landfill of Jiroft City)
One of the major factors, contributing to the emission of greenhouse gases in the environment is generation of pollutant gases in municipal landfills. As for the design and building of a gas collecting system, it is necessary to properly estimate the amount and type of the landfill emissions. By means of LandGEM model, this study predicts the amount and type of the landfill gases, produced for ...
